West Essex First Aid Squad

Since 1937, the West Essex First Aid Squad has provided emergency medical services for the municipalities of the West Essex area including West Caldwell, Caldwell, North Caldwell, Essex Fells and Fairfield. The Squad also provides EMS support to fellow public safety agencies during fires, hazardous material incidents, and other emergencies as well as standbys for area events such as July 4th Fireworks, graduations, Gazebo concerts, and others. From its Headquarters at Bloomfield Avenue and Melrose Place, the Squad's volunteer members operate four ambulances, an emergency response support vehicle, and a rescue truck to answer more than 2,500 calls per year.

In addition to answering emergency calls, Squad members spend many hours training and honing their skills. Most Squad members are NJ certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and our new members are working toward attaining their EMT certifications. Our ambulances are always staffed with at least two EMTs. Besides continuing member training, the Squad has an on-going program of maintaining and upgrading its vehicles, equipment, and supplies. Our ambulances, for example, carry the basics such as oxygen, bandages, splints, and backboards, but also more advanced items such as defibrillators and Epi-Pens. Our rescue truck has a complete complement of modern hydraulic and pneumatic extrication tools and high powered scene lighting.

If you have an interest in giving back to the community or you have an interest in emergency medical services we always have a need for new members. Members who have the ability to answer emergency calls during weekday hours are especially needed. Membership is open to all persons over the age of 16 who live or work in any of the five municipalities served by the Squad. No experience is necessary and all required training is provided by the Squad. Please contact the Squad at 973-403-8568 or fill out a preliminary application on the Squad's website at www.westessexfas.org.

The primary source of the funds needed to operate the Squad come from donations by the residents and businesses of the five municipalities we serve. Every year we mail our appeal for donations to keep this vital lifesaving service operating. Donations may be mailed at any time to:
